Volunteers/Visitors
Why do people volunteer for the Tumaini Homes of Hope charity?
Apart from wanting to work with children who are HIV/AIDS infected, it is the overwhelming feeling of showing and giving your love, care and support to all the children to help alleviate poverty and suffering: there are many different motives that inspire people to volunteer for this work.

Due to the considerable legal and administrative requirements relating to volunteers both here in the UK and in Kenya, this is not something that the UK charity organises directly. However, there are many volunteer agencies which have associations within Kenya, including Mombasa. These can be found by through researching ‘voluntary work abroad’ on the internet.
Directions to the Tumaini Children’s Home
The Home is situated in Bamburi, north of Mombasa town (about half an hour’s drive from the airport). Look for signs to the Bamburi Cement Works, which is just off the main highway (Mombasa to Malindi/Kilifi road). Turn left at this point and head towards the cement works. You will pass it on your left – a couple of miles on and a few roundabouts later you will see a sign for the Home on the right hand side of the road. Go down this narrow track and you will hear the children laughing – follow these joyful sounds! Sirio School is situated directly across the track from the Home. The Clinic is joined to the Home but has a separate entrance on to the track.
We get lots of enquiries about getting extra baggage allowance so that visitors can take clothes, medication or toys, etc. directly out to the Home. You should check with your airline what their policy is and apply well in advance for any increase in allowance. If you require a letter from us to support your application to the airline then please do contact us. Many goods can be purchased cheaply in Mombasa and we can obtain an up-to-date Wish List if you write to us before your departure.
Anyone wishing to donate goods or money, whether on site or off, MUST ask for a receipt. This is to protect the integrity of the staff and trustees of the Home/School and other projects we are working on. All visitors are requested to sign the Visitors Book if visiting the Home. Please ask to do this if the staff forget to mention it. Thankyou.
